It has been a long year for all of us and it could only end on a high note for one team and I'm glad it's me ;) The Penguins organization would like to congratulate the Caps and Blues for making it to the conference finals.I would also like to congratulate the Kings on pushing the Pens to OT of game 7. There is no doubt that Alex will win one in the next few years his team is built too solid to not win one.
Us teams with elite players who demand large salaries will have to find ways to stay competitive while juggling the cap every season. The window of opportunity closes quickly so I am fortunate to have two under my belt so I can honestly say that I can live in mediocrity for a few years and be content since I've tasted the champagne. I still however will be gunning for my third next season.
I would like to make a quick breakdown of the Pens cup runs. In our first season we came in first in the east but struggled to win on the road. We were pushed to game 7 in both our first rounds(I believe it was the Flyers and Devils). We than disposed of the Islanders but not before they broke our unbeaten streak at home fortunately for us we broke our losing streak on the road in the same series. We were finally in the finals against the president trophy Red Wings. Falling behind 3-1 we really felt the end was inevitable. We all know the rest of the story. The Pens came back to win the series 4-3 despite Phaneuf practically living in the penalty box. His penalty problems were the main reason he wasn't going to be a Pen when these playoffs started. I wasn't going to have any of that this time around.Heck he almost got 100 pim for the Blues in these playoffs. He however did play great leading them in points.
Now to this season.
Trading for Sturm was a nice move he played well. It did piss me off that Comrie all of a sudden played like a new man this season and got more points than Sturm. It just shows that even sim players play better or worse in different situations.(Comrie,Phaneuf). The addition of Kesler and Zajac are directed more for next season. So they didn't help all that much this season. The grand addition was Mats Sundin who played great for us down the stretch. He did however sadly slow down in the playoffs and would have probably taken most of the blame for not producing if the Pens had lost. It is safe to say that he must of felt pretty good that he assisted on the OT game winner against his former team. Sundin can retire happy now. So off to the playoffs we go.RD 1 - We are quite surprised when we absolutely destroy the Devils. I must admit I like the look of this team and feel they will be true contenders next season. Great trades NJ GM your doing a great job!
We than bumped into the Islanders again. This time they had us on the ropes 2-1. This is where I make my cup winning decision. I pull Fleury and put in old man Hasek. He doesn't disappoint he wins the next three against the Islanders and off to the conference finals we go. Now we face Charlie and the Caps and we have a HUGE problem. I have Strum and Morrow out for a long period of time. To my surprise Hasek wins 4 of the next 5 and it ends up not being much of a series even without my two LW's. So off to the finals we go and with a healthy lineup finally! Again we fall behind 3 games to one. NOTE:Game one had some controversy. Why Strum and Morrow weren't activated we will never know but it's water under the bridge now. I would also like to mention Brett Mclean's heroic game 6. He scored the game tying and game winning goals on his only two shifts a total of two minutes playing time forcing a game seven in Pittsburgh.Way to go Mclean!!!.
We finally complete the come back "again" and become the first ever back to back champions of the league.
It was nice to have the two main players that I traded for this season assist on Jack Johnson's goal in OT to win the cup. It would also be fitting to have Hasek win the MVP since I doubt the Pens would have gotten past the Islanders without Hasek's experience and the confidence that he brings to the young Penguins team.
A Congrats to first time winners David Booth,Marco Sturm,Mats Sundin,Ryan Kesler and Marc-Andre Fleury.
Thanks to all the gms for another great season I hope to see you all again for season three. See you than!
